UX Spain 2017 / An improvement in my perspective

by lis.garcia | On May 11-13 was the UXSPAIN17 in the beautiful city of Gijon. It is one of the most important events in Spain about design and user experience. It was my first year attending and totally exceeded my expectations. I realised, after listening to the talks, that anyone who creates products, should attend to the talks. The event is interesting for all the jobs where users are involved, so it is not just for web designers.

I have to say that the organisation did a good job, not only in the talks, in the outside events and breaks, which allowed attendees to talk each others.

Focusing on the talks, as I said before, they spoke about how to enrich user experience and add value to it. We also saw different perspectives and real projects with its phases and experiences. All of them agreed that in order to have a good UX is always mandatory to know and understand the user demands and the way he/she interacts with the product.

The day started with the presentation of Claire Rowland, who covered how the product design should deal with the connection with other devices, to achieve user goals in the app interaction. Product + App, she mentioned cases where the app doesn’t work as well as user expected. She recommended to mislead users sometimes, not to make him/her realise that there is a problem and to have an homogeneity between product and device in terms of look and feel design and usability. “If you do things simple, it will take more work to engineers and developers, but the result will be a perfect user experience”.

The next subject  was a non digital design project (service design) by Itziar Pobes. The interesting thing of this talk was to see a UX application in offline projects. The goal was achieving a better user face to face experience in offices, with an improvement in the space design and organisation. Therefore her team had to understand what the workers and users do everyday, trying to identify the  mistakes and potential improvements. To solve them, they mapped out everything, emphasising in workflows and place layouts. I would stress “The implementation starts from the beginning, working with people”.

Three talks came over after Itziar, therein speakers opened pathways of what the future could be. Oscar Méndez Soto spoke about machine era, on how to create a intelligent user experience helped with artificial intelligence. Beatriz Belmonte showed how alternative futures studies, in which fiction give us some clues, can help to take into account the impact of our designs in people’s life. And the third one was Martín Álvarez Espinar, who introduced the W3C research areas to implement the last web needs, exposing and adopting public APIs and standards. In the W3C the efforts are focused on virtual reality in websites, improvements in interaction on automotive, the contextual connection between devices and the user interaction with digital advertisement.

One of the talks to highlight from the first day was from the speaker Javier Vélez Reyes. Javier talks about the evolution of web design to web components design, in order to create a personalised and homogeneous user experience. Nowadays, websites become a tool of continued interaction with users where you receive feedback of your business. Here is where the term CX (Customer experience) appears, so component design help to deal with. We do a lot of micro-gestures which cause several messages. The components adapt them, visually, to have an easier user interaction with the service. I would highlight  “As UX designer we have to take in account that we can model user steps to reach the goals”.

The day ended with Sergio Estella and Nacho Gil talks. Sergio Estella introduced his work in Global Forest Watch, analysing forest changes. In the project the design was one of the keys, because it shows data in a visual and interactive way. The main objective was to be reachable, useful and easy-to-understand, to invoke discussions. Finally, Nacho Gil exposed the reality of the profession  and invited us to be part of the people who model the future.

The second day, the first talk was a personal reflection about  his career. It was given by Brendan Kearns from Twitter.

Julia Ivorra, which is a research designer in BBC Sport, spoke about the researches in Rio Olympics. The challenge was to know how the users used the product, making studies and having results. Therefore they use the Agile method: they organised the work in rounds, they went to user’s house and saw them when they were using the product, and they also asked for how they use the competitors. All the research and conclusions were summarised in a weekly report, that was shared with  the company. Sharing this work helped all the departments to realise about aspects they hadn’t noticed yet.

After this intense talk, Rosa Llop stepped onto the stage. She reflected how the interface plays a significant role today,  supported by artistic work. I would remark something she said “Art does questions and design resolve the problem”.

Ana Ormaechea was the next, with the project “Diario de Cuba”. Her team had a challenge with this project, because they had to deal with the internet restriction in Cuba, so they looked for new ways of deliver the content and to adapt it to the different context situations. For example, they had to reduce the size of the newsletters, because Cubans have limited time to access to email. It meant not to use image only text, which should have a nice and effective design and layout. Also they had different targets (Miami, Spain or Cuba), so the content was different for each place and conditions.

Laura García Barrio explained a similar case, as a UX designer and research in Uber. She had to analyse how the application was used in the different countries. They had to go there to ask users and try to access to application with their technologies. They realised that it was totally different to what they expected. They came back to headquarters with its resutlts and the local devices to present what they experimented there.

Wenzes Sanz was the last speaker that I want to highlight. He advocated to break the web design rules, web design standards and to bring old simple web design back.

The event, as I said before, was a good experience that I would like to repeat.

Building IWIK from the ground up

by lis.garcia | Quobis’s marketing team develops use cases to make Sippo’s features shine. After a customer request, when a new use case appears. Them our highly experienced team starts working to create the perfect solution in order to explain to our customers what Sippo contributes and how it works.

Quobis has just developed a new use case to give support to a field technician through an application tool. This tool uses Sippo screen-sharing and white-board features. The result is a platform where a technician can get in contact with an expert. The technician is assisted through a video call, where he shares what he’s seeing, and the expert can help to find the solution. He can add notes and drawings over the video to make explanation as clear and easy to follow as possible.

Now let’s look at this from a design point of view.

The first thing we had to think about was what kind of enterprises would request this solution, for example those which send technicians to the customer houses to check the products or to fix problems. Two options came up:  telephone service providers or gas / boiler suppliers. So we finally chose both and we created a brand which could be used by either of these two options.

On this basis, we had to look for a neutral brand name, which represented the values of being dynamic, simple, fresh, professional and valid for the image of the type of companies mentioned above.  “IWIK”  was the name chosen from the list of possibilities.
Once the name was selected, I started to draw what the imagotype would be. After experimenting with the lettering and considering that the name reversed spells Kiwi ( an animal and a fruit ), the result was:

After using a typography which fits with the values wanted, I focused on its shape to provide dynamism and to highlight the brand. For this, the isologotype, which goes in the lefthand side of the logotype, is a directional arrow to center the user view on the logo. It closes the imagotype, it is the same as “K” shape.

I decided to use a shade of Red colour to symbolize the brand. It is a warm colour to represent a trustworthy company which sends technicians to the homes of its customers.

Next step was to think about the user experience and the app interface would be in its look and feel. It is a simple interface from which you can access your schedule quickly where your daily appointments are detailed. I then designed the following adaptive application.

The technician has all the necessary resources to solve any issues at the touch of a button. From the issue details page, they can make a voice or video call to an expert in just one click, thanks to the Sippo’s implementation. It is unnecessary to use another application as Sippo comes all bases.

To complete this experience, we have created an infographic to explain the new use case .
Now we are combining components in order to be able to experiment and play with the app… To do this a designer created a style guide to help facilitate the development of perfect app

WEBINAR: Digital transformation in banking and insurance industries with real-time video

Next Wednesday April 26th, 2017 Quobis will be speaking about web conferencing in banks and insurtech. Register for free below.

Insurance and banking companies are being disrupted and going through relevant digital transformation projects to meet regulatory changes and to enable new digital customer service channels in a fast changing landscape. Celebrating the first Quobis festival

Last November 29th and 30th Quobis opened the new headquarters with an event called “Quobis Festival”. Two days, in which the office was full of traditional entertainment activities from Galician festivals.

cartel-patronais-02

by Lis Garcia | As every Galician town festivity it had all activities that you can find in this parties: fireworks, live music, “Vermú” time, traditional food, traditional music and a bingo with some prizes, as you can see in the poster. This was a similar one to the ones you glance at town’s squares or bars.

The event started at 17.30 pm with some fireworks to announce the beginning of the activities, which were shouted in the Quobis surroundings and doing noise.

This welcomed all the attendees to go into the office to join the party, which started with a craft beer experience. A short workshop about how they do the beer. This was thanks to “NÓS craft beer” collaboration, some guys that do a incredible tasty beer not so far from our quarters.

The concert was sung by one of the main ambassadors of Galician music, Uxía Senlle, an unbeatable singer who sings traditional music but with a renewed and personal treatment. She performed accompanied by Sergio Tannus, a talent brazilian musician who plays so many instruments, in this occasion he played two different traditional guitars and a tambourine. They inaugurated our new stage and our Walk of Fame with a commemorative plate and a signature of each of them.  A great way to start the Quobis Festival !!!! 🙂

After the greatest start, the 30th, the patron saint’s followed with a ‘sesión vermú’ in the Ollomol canteen at 11 am. This includes some snacks and the traditional drink vermouth, which was the starter of the big meal that is going to happens. In Galicia a Vermú is the time after Sunday mass, when the people go to the bar to have some drinks before lunch.

The big Christmas lunch had the main Galician dish: Octopus !!!, a live show of a Galician “Pulpeira” who cooked like the traditional way: with a huge copper pot and served in a circle wood board with oil and bell pepper. A delicious dish complemented with Galician pie (indeed, ‘empanada’), Spanish omelets, croquettes…, a full party lunch.

_mg_3091-copia

To end this two days we had a “Bingo” with three prizes: to the first line completed, two lines and complete Bingo. The lucky winners were David Vílchez (Bingo), Sergio and me 😉 .

In the pictures you can see the nice atmosphere, which was created by the members of the Quobis team, in these days.

Sandra Domínguez: 10 years of experience in Quobis

_mg_2803redu

by lis.garcia | Sandra Domínguez is now 10 years old being part of the company, as an essential part of the Quobis team. She is in charge of Administration department and she has took some time to answer this interview in recognition of her dedication.

Let’s get started!!! from the beginning. It’s known that sometimes in childhood kids show skills or attitudes which allow us to predict their future career will be like. When you were a little girl, Did you know which your professional steps will be? Or Was it something from the moment you had to choose a degree?

I opted for Administration career, but first of all I was considering a number of options and I wasn’t sure which follow out. Although I was aimed to follow Administration career, before I decided to take a upper cycle in Administration and Finances. It set out a clear and specific view of the field, I liked it and I was good at. It encouraged me to study Business Sciences and to continue developing my skills.

How did you get to Quobis? And which was your first impression of the company?

I was looking for a change and a professional progress. So I saw a Quobis job offer in a famous job opportunity online platform, which got me to Quobis. One of the reason, of choose that offer, was the fact of being an english offer, this attracted my attention. It made me realise that English will be necessary for job functions and I encouraged me to apply for it. In addition,Quobis was located in O Porriño, where I was looking for. Both facts were decisive to be interested in the offer.

My first contact with Quobis was in job interview in the last old office. They had just recently set up, it was a hot day in august and there weren’t air conditioner. I remember having an awful hot air and thinking that if I had to work like this it would be nasty…and look!! 10 years has passed…But now with air conditioner!!!!!

About my impression of the company. I was interesting not just for Iago and Elías career before, also for being a newly launched young enterprise and it had promise a long career.

Had you worked in other companies before arrive Quobis?

Yes I had. I had had experience before to join Quobis, I was working in other companies from different sectors. I can’t complain, I have always been working in my area and even though during my studies and before.

How was the moment when you receive the news that you were accepted ?

I remember that I was working in previous enterprise, and obviously, It was a tremendous joy for getting the change I was looking for and for being part of a young team.

I discover that in the beginnings Quobis wasn’t as today’s. How was Quobis then?

Of course not. Quobis has developed and changed a lot since 10 years ago. At that time we were only six members, nowadays Quobis is a team of thirty two!!!!! Not just change and growth, the lines of business also has evolved to focus more on developing its own product.

How was your feeling  the first time you get into Quobis office?

I am going to use this moment, which no one is listening, to confess the first thing that caught my eye. It was that everybody said anything ( about work issues ), being side by side. If they wanted to discuss, they would send you an email. I wasn’t used to that work method; nevertheless at present, it would be very difficult to organize my tasks.

Refers to laboral issue, I have to say that the first impressions were excellent, because the welcome each member gave me. I feel like part of the group easily and quickly.

How was the first few weeks in Quobis? ( You can tell me moments of pressure, when you didn’t know how to solve, and how now this thing you do it with eyes closed :P)

I don’t have memory of pressure moments; at the beginning, like in every change, it tooks an effort to adapt to new methods of work, to know and to understand the product, admin software, etc. In addition when soon I focused on, and with Iago and Elías help, there wasn’t inconvenient.

Who was in the past part of Quobis team? And who arrive next?

When I joined Quobis there were six people: apart from Iago and Elías,  Alberto Vilas, Bea Monfort, David Prieto and Isaac Hermida were part of the team; in a short period “female reinforcements” Andrea R. Reguera and Alexia Acosta. We aren’t majority but less we could occasionally go, which we called, “El café de las Machas”  (Wink, wink dedicated to the mates from that time). Later entered Ángel Pequeño, Manuel Lugilde, Alejandro Castiñeiras… nowadays they aren’t part of the team, but we stayed in contact of the result of the good friendship we had.

On 10 years you had had good times and fun time, which you remember and you say “ Such great moment we had” ¿Which one do you remember?

Oh my God!!! There are so many good times !!! There are numerous anecdotes, I always flaunt about it: a good working environment with a friendly atmosphere, given for every single member of the Quobis team and the close group we are. I think the new hires quickly sense it and they want to keep it. At present, to work in this atmosphere is a privilege. Always times of pressure,  work overload or bad days do better with a few laughs, jokes ( like Antón Román imitations of Gila ), and members joy.

To choose a Great Moment is difficult. If I have to make a choice, I think, I`ll opt for “Jorge rescue operation”. Our mate Jorge Casal got enclosed in the toilet, because lock broken. I try to open the door kicking it and the heel of the shoes nailed in the door… it is clear that I would do whatever is required for a mate. Those, who were there, will laugh while reading, except Jorge, who even in this moment, doesn’t find it funny.

_mg_2783-redu

Everybody has a career situation which let us a mark, because of a bad moment but it helps them to improve. In yours 10 years in Quobis Which was that moment/ situation you think it will be an important mark in you development?

I could say that there was some delicate moments in the company, but like in live they help us to learn about them, be better and to make us stronger.

What is the thing that you most like about Quobis and to work on it ?

It’s so valued the trust the persons in charge place in us, in doing our work, and how friendly and supportive they are. The comfortable and relaxed atmosphere create a well-being work time. In addition to comradeship, mutual respect and good feeling between workmates make easily waking up every morning.

Did you think Quobis would become what it is today?

No, I didn’t. It wasn’t an extremely change until you think about it and you realise it, it was a gradual change.

In the future, would you like remain part of Quobis?

Of course YES!! And I hope Quobis team will still want as a part of them.

How do you feel your 10 years dedication anniversary Quobis surprise? How do you experience it?

Buff, It was a huge surprise!!! I couldn’t imagine what is going to happens. In fact, in the morning, when I got into the Quobis office, they threw me confetti and I didn’t even realise what they were celebrating. Only with this I would be happy. And I didn’t know what will be next. 😉

After the confetti surprise I was a little nervous, but when I see the present I got in shock. I wasn’t able to react, to say a single word and to express what I was feeling. I will pay attention in my 25th anniversary ;).

It was an amazing gesture, I’m very grateful!!! I had lots of fun.
